Colorado Department of Ag launches new Ag Stewardship Tax Credit (ASTC)

Text reads "Agricultural Stewardship Tax Credit” with Colorado Department of Agriculture logos, a red barn, crops, and cow images.

This tax credit is meant to encourage the practice of qualified stewardship practices on a farm or ranch, including any practice that: increases soil health, improves water efficiency, or creates more diverse and beneficial ecosystems while maintaining the productivity of the farm or ranch.

  • Is based on a list of annual, perennial, and supplemental practices.
  • Is refundable (producers can get a tax rebate if they do not owe taxes)
  • Cannot overlap with existing grants or tax credits (it cannot be applied to the same practice on the same acreage as another grant).

The Ag Stewardship Tax Credit (ASTC):

The tax credit application will open in November and is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. So, if you are interested in applying, it may be beneficial to look over the application requirements and gather all necessary documentation prior to the open application date. More information on the ASTC can be found here.

Probing Our Country’s Soil Health Program

Participating landowners will receive:

  • Compensation for your time (~ 1 hour) for helping
  • A personalized soil health report of your fields. The value of this lab work (at no cost to you) is about a thousand dollars per field.
  • A copy of a book called “Probing Our Country's Soil Health”. This will be a hard-copy photo book illustrating soil health across the country and the outcomes to this project.

To learn more about this project, click on  Probing Our Country’s Soil Health to see a short video

If interested in participating, you will need to:

  • Sign up for a one-hour Zoom Meeting where a facilitator will lead you through a management survey for 2 or 3 fields.
  • Grant access to fields for hand-probe soil sampling 2 or 3 sampling sites from each field. Normally this will happen 3-6 months after the survey; you will be notified beforehand.

To enroll as a landowner participant, click on this booking page link to schedule an appointment: https://calendly.com/probing-our-countrys-soil-health/shape-survey
