SOIL HEALTH WORKSHOP
In June 2013, the Fremont Conservation District in partnership with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) held a full day workshop on "Unlock the Secrets in the Soil" Workshop. Presentations were made by Joel Moffett, District Conservationist; BJ Shoup, NRCS State Soil Scientist; and Storm Casper, Soil Conservation Technician. The topics discussed were "Soil Health, So What Do You See?"; "The Chemical and Physical Properties of Soil"; and, "Soil Health, Principles to Grow With!". There were also demonstrations on how the soil gets saturated, and the difference between dirt and soil. There was also discussion on why cover crops during non-growing seasons are so important for soil health in keeping the soil aerated and keeping the organisms that live in the soil alive. Twenty-four participants were treated to a lot of dirt and soil that day!!

ORCHARD AND FRUIT TREE WORKSHOP
In February 2013, the Fremont Conservation District in partnership with CSU Extension, guest speaker Dan Fernandez, and Jenkins Farms in Penrose held a full day workshop on pruning, pest management, and best practices for maximum production from orchards. With 37 participants, they were given hands - on experience at Jenkins Farm.

DROUGHT OR NO DROUGHT - THAT IS THE QUESTION!
In March 2012, 83 people attended the "Drought or No Drought - That is the Question!" workshop in Canon City, Colorado. This workshop was a joint effort between the Fremont Conservation District and the Custer County Conservation District, with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Colorado State University - Extension as partners. Presentations were made by Brian Bledsoe, Chief Meteorologist at KKTV, on the drought forecast; Mage Skordahl, Hydrologist for NRCS, on the Current Snowpack report and outlook; Dr. Stephen Koontz, Associate Professor at CSU in Economics and Commodity Trading, on the Marketing Outlook for Hay and Cattle; and, Dr. Jeffrey Tranel, Agricultural and Business Management Economist for CSU Extension, on the Economics of Drought and tools and decision making aids. All in all, the people who attended were very pleased with the presentations and information received from all speakers!!
